Q :: “You ought to be my
son………………………….. wrong ” ---- who speaks
to whom? Did the speaker manage to teach the boy what she claimed? Give reason
for your answer.
ANS :: Mrs. Jones said this to the boy Roger.
:: Yes she was able to teach the boy what she claimed.
:: On one night Mrs. Jones was returning home at eleven
o’clock. A boy named Roger ran up behind her and tried to snatched her purse. Knowing that the boy roger has made
offence Mrs. Jones brought him to her home . She then asked the boy to clean
his face in the sink . Mrs.Jones offered him cocoa , lima beans and ham. She
also cut him a half of her ten-cent cake.
Finally
Mrs.Jones gave him ten dollars to buy blue sued shoes . She
then asked Roger not to make such mistake of latching of anyone’s purse and
behave himself. Thus she made the
boy understand to achieve some thing by hard work not by devilish like .
Though Roger was wrong she did not hate him . By her kindness and motherly love
she changed the boy to a trustworthy boy.

24) page 257Q:: The social picture in the story ‘Thank you ma’am’
ANS :: Langston Hughes has acutely presented the social
picture of poverty of African-American culture in his short story ‘Thank you
Ma’am’. In the story we see that Roger, the poverty- stricken little boy has no
one at his home to clean his face. He remains unfed even at eleven o’clock at
night. Mrs. Jones is a working lady and she has to work hard to earn her bread
and butter. Her past life was no so pleasant. But in spite of such hardship she
retains the virtue of kindness and sympathy. She is the representative of her
class. In the short story the diversified nature of American culture is
reflected.
